Braley Statement on Pay Equality

Statement

Date: April 8, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Bruce Braley (IA-01) released the following statement marking Equal Pay Day--the day symbolizing how far into the year women must work in order to overcome the gender pay gap in the United States--and the day the U.S. Senate is expected to vote on the Paycheck Fairness Act.

"Working women in Iowa deserve the same opportunities, the same experiences--and the same pay as men in similar roles," Braley said. "All parents want to make sure their daughters are treated the same as our sons in the workplace, and I'll continue to support efforts to ensure equal pay for equal work."

The United States Census Bureau estimated in 2008 that median earnings for women were only 77% of those for men. It is estimated that this gap costs Iowa women over $4.6 billion dollars a year.
