Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today released the following statement after it was announced that nationwide enrollment in the Affordable Care Act's health insurance marketplaces reached its goal of 6 million enrollees with time to spare:
"Reaching this milestone confirms that the Affordable Care Act is helping deliver high-quality, affordable health coverage to millions of Americans, but there are still too many uninsured Memphians. With just four days left before the HealthCare.gov open enrollment deadline, it is more important than ever that uninsured Memphians sign up and get covered right now."
"The ACA does not permit insurance companies to discriminate against women or those with pre-existing conditions, and young adults can stay on their parent's insurance until age 26. It also saves our seniors money on their prescriptions. Put simply: the Affordable Care Act is helping make quality health care a right rather than a privilege for millions of Americans. While Memphians are seeing many of the law's benefits, Tennesseans still cannot take full advantage because of Govornor Haslam's refusal to expand Medicaid. It is time for Republicans to drop their efforts to prevent citizens from getting the benefits they deserve and their efforts to take away the benefits and protections citizens now have because of the Affordable Care Act."
