Remarks With Qatari Foreign Minister Khalid Al Attiya Before Their Meeting

Press Release

SECRETARY KERRY: Good afternoon, everybody. I'm very happy to welcome the foreign minister of Qatar here, Dr. Khalid, who has met with me now almost as much as any foreign minister since I have been Secretary. We've had a very strong and collaborative relationship working on our defense cooperation relationship, but also on Syria, Mideast peace, the issues of Egypt, the Gulf region, Iran -- very, very significant dialogue, and I'm very appreciative for that.

I've just met with His Royal Highness the Emir when I was in Algeria and he was in Algeria at the same time. We had a good discussion about some of our mutual security issues. And today, Dr. Khalid and I will spend a fair amount of time talking about a number of the issues that are of most concern to us at the moment, particularly Syria, particularly the Middle East peace and Iran, and questions of security in the entire Maghreb/Sahel/Levant.

Foreign Minister Attiya has signaled that the Emir and Qatar want to be particularly helpful to us in our counterterrorism efforts. They have taken the initiative with respect to efforts to try to see if there is a way forward in terms of peace dialogue with the Taliban. We're very grateful to them for their efforts to be an intermediary, to try to help put that proposition to the test.

So I welcome the foreign minister here and look forward to our dialogue today. Thank you. Thank you.

FOREIGN MINISTER ATTIYA: Thank you. Ladies and gentlemen, good afternoon. As the State Secretary Mr. Kerry has just said, I think you covered everything we're going to touch on. And I'm really happy to be with you this afternoon. And as you mentioned, that there is a lot to talk about whether in the region or other where, and I hope our talk will be a fruitful one today. Thank you.

SECRETARY KERRY: Thank you, Khalid.

FOREIGN MINISTER ATTIYA: Thank you very much.

SECRETARY KERRY: Thank you all.
