Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra, Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, issued the following statement commemorating the birthday of Cesar E. Chavez, who would have turned 87 today:

"Cesar Chavez serves as an inspiration to all Americans, young and old, of what can be achieved when we organize, sacrifice, and fight for a just cause. He transformed his early experiences from the barrio of "Sal Si Puedes" ("Escape If You Can") into a movement and union whose slogan became "Sí Se Puede" ("Yes, We Can").

This Cesar Chavez Day, let us continue his legacy and work together to strengthen the American Dream, and put an end to the separation of hardworking families by finally fixing our broken immigration system. As Cesar Chavez once said, "Our ambitions must be broad enough to include the aspirations and needs of others, for their sakes and for our own.' "
