U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) wants to improve care for disabled persons by expanding tax-preferred savings accounts. Sen. Toomey has joined Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) in supporting the bipartisan Achieving a Better Life Experience (ABLE) Act, a bill which makes it easier for families to save for their loved ones' future care.

"The ABLE Act is a smart, commonsense way of ensuring that families and people with disabilities have a way to set aside funds to maintain health, independence, and quality of life for their loved ones," said Sen. Toomey. "This is a simple but significant step to support the dignity of persons living with disabilities. I am pleased to team with Sen. Casey in this bipartisan effort and applaud him for his leadership on the issue."

The ABLE Act would establish tax-preferred accounts to help disabled persons and their families set up funds to pay for qualified disability expenses. These include education, housing, medical, and transportation needs. The bill would supplement, but not supplant, benefits provided through private insurance, the Medicaid program, the beneficiary's employment, and other sources.
