Sen. Flake: More CBP Officers at Arizona Ports Will Maximize Cross-Border Trade

Statement

Date: April 1, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Trade

U.S. Sen. Jeff Flake (R-AZ) today issued the following statement in response to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) announcement that the Arizona ports of Douglas, San Luis and Nogales will receive additional staffing as part of a broader plan to allocate of 2,000 new CBP officers at air, land and sea ports across the country.

CBP's announcement comes less than one week after Flake and Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) sent a letter to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson stressing the importance of additional CPB staffing at land ports of entry along the southern U.S. border.

"While there is still a ways to go before they are adequately staffed, I am pleased to see Arizona ports among those set to receive additional U.S. Customs and Border Patrol officers," said Flake. "Ensuring adequate staffing at Arizona's ports -- especially the new Mariposa crossing in Nogales -- will maximize cross-border trade."
