Casey Statement on New CDC Autism Statistics

Today, U.S. Senator Bob Casey (D-PA), a member of the Senate Finance Committee, released the following statement on new data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) indicating that 1 in 68 children (1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls) has an autism spectrum disorder.

"These alarming statistics underscore the need to address the long term needs of families caring for those with autism," said Senator Casey. "Parents of children with disabilities face daily struggles that we can't even begin to imagine. The ABLE Act will provide families with the financial peace of mind they need, and Congress should pass it immediately."

Senator Casey and Senator Burr introduced the Achieving a Better Life Experience Act (ABLE Act) -- bipartisan legislation to create an improved quality of life for individuals with disabilities through tax-free savings accounts. Congressman Ander Crenshaw (R-FL) also introduced companion legislation in the House. The bill currently has 69 co-sponsors in the Senate including Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell as well as 351 cosponsors in the House.
