Today, U.S. Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA) issued the following statement on the mudslide that occurred in Snohomish County in Oso on State Route 530:
"My thoughts and prayers go out to the families affected by Saturday's horrific mudslide in Snohomish County. All Washingtonians stand with these families in this time of tragedy. I'd also like to thank our state and local first responders for their heroism in responding to this disaster.
"I'm calling on all federal agencies to contribute whatever resources necessary for the rescue and security operation. My staff and I will continue to be in contact with local, state and federal agencies, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Army Corps of Engineers, the U.S. Navy and the Coast Guard, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the U.S. Geological Survey and the National Weather Service.
"I'll work closely with Governor Inslee, Senator Murray, Rep. DelBene and Rep. Larsen, and local officials to ensure that federal assistance is made available to Snohomish County and Washington state authorities.
"We urge residents along the flood plain of the Stillaguamish River to follow the advice of local officials and not take unnecessary risks as the threat of flooding persists. For more information, residents can call (425) 388-5088."
