Yesterday, Congressman Joe Pitts (PA-16) visited the Food and Drug Administration headquarters in Silver Spring, Md. The Energy and Commerce Health Subcommittee, which Pitts chairs, has oversight over the agency.
"The Food and Drug Administration has extraordinary responsibility, regulating about 25 percent of all consumer products. From grocery shelves to hospital supply closets, the FDA is charged with making sure that products are safe and effective," said Pitts.
Since taking over the Health Subcommittee chair, Pitts has guided legislation to reform FDA review of new drugs, generic drugs, and medical devices. The FDA is implementing these new laws right now.
"From time to time, I get updates on the FDA's work at hearings, but it is also critical that I see firsthand what is going on at the agency," said Pitts. "I appreciate the time I spent with top management and employees. We will continue to work together to keep the American people safe and make sure that companies are free to innovate and develop new products and therapies."
