In case you missed it, The Daily Item earlier this week printed a story including comments from U.S. Representative Tom Marino (PA-10) on the ongoing situation in Ukraine. The entirety of the statement is below. Today, the House Foreign Affairs Committee will convene for a hearing to examine to recent events in Ukraine and determine the next steps.
Rep. Marino is also a cosponsor of H.Res. 499, a resolution condemning the violation of Ukrainian sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity by military forces of the Russian Federation. The bipartisan resolution was introduced yesterday by House Foreign Affairs Chairman Ed Royce (R-CA) and Ranking Member Eliot Engel (D-NY).
"As vice chairman of the Europe Subcommittee in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and as a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, I support the decisive action that can be taken in cooperation with our European and NATO allies.
"Unfortunately, in August 2008, Russia was allowed to invade and control Georgian territory and the aggression went largely unchecked. Putin has learned from our weak response to his war with Georgia and from our weak approaches to foreign challenges-notably in Syria and Iran-that Russian military action in Ukraine will likely go unchallenged.
"What Putin needs to understand is that some of us know Russia's imperialist tendencies mask its extraordinarily weak and utterly corrupt economy.
"Putin also knows that we have tolls at our disposal to isolate Russia and bring ruin to her economy. The U.S. and our allies should be talking about expelling Russia from the G-8, implementing strong economic sanctions, seizing the ill-gotten assets of Putin and the Russian oligarchs who support him, and denying visa to Russian and Ukrainian officials who supported the invasion."
