Issue Position: Spending and Debt

While we still have a lot of work ahead of us, we have made some important progress on reducing federal spending since I have been in office. For the first time since the Korean War, total federal spending has gone down two years in a row. But our work is far from done and we need to continue making serious changes to the way we spend the taxpayer's money.

In Washington, I'm leading the call for long-term spending controls and introduced the zero-based budgeting bill. My bill will create a system that will look at every department and agency to identify effectiveness and efficiency of all spending items. This will create real accountability for the every facet of the government and it will end excessive spending and preserve essential government functions. We cannot continue to bankrupt our great nation for future generations.
