Today Ranking Member Henry A. Waxman released the following statement on the Obama Administration's announcement of its global initiative against infectious diseases:
"Today, senior officials from the U.S. government joined with dignitaries from over 25 nations and key international partners to launch an initiative that will help protect Americans from global health threats.
"With our increasingly global community, infectious diseases -- like Avian Flu or drug-resistant TB -- can spread to this country in a matter of hours. We have made progress in the decade since the emergence of SARS in improving countries' capabilities to respond to outbreaks. But with 80% of the world's nations still unprepared to deal with new pandemics, more can and should be done.
"I welcome the U.S.'s commitment to work with our global partners and ensure that all nations have the capacity to prevent, detect, and rapidly address disease threats. And I applaud the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the agency's leadership on this important issue and role in keeping us safe here at home."
