Blog: Legislative Agenda

Statement

Hello this is your congressman, Michael Burgess. The second session of Congress is about to begin, and I wanted to talk to you about some of the issues we ahead this year. With dedication and commitment, we can build this great country back, and we can create a better future for our children and grandchildren.

For instance, we must focus on the federal government's out of control spending. We need a government that is efficient, less expensive, and more responsive. We don't need a government that continually overspends and puts burdensome regulations on small businesses. I ran a small business, my medical practice in Lewisville, and I believe the best thing the federal government can do is get out of the way and let businesses create jobs.

Also this year, we must solve the threat Medicare patients have of keeping their doctors. It's been an annual issue for ten years. I worked with the Energy and Commerce Committee last year to create legislation that addresses this important issue for seniors. It passed out of committee with full bipartisan support. I am confident that in this next session Congress will be able to, once and for all, fix this problem to ensure Medicare patients of continued access to their doctors.

Furthermore, we need to continue our debates on security and privacy issues. Americans have Fourth Amendment rights that must to be protected. I am committed to working with members to make sure Americans can retain their freedoms.

Lastly, as the vice chairman of the Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee of Energy and Commerce, we held 70 hearings last year to hold this administration accountable. I will continue to have vigorous oversight on agencies and departments such as the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, and Human and Health Services. We are a country founded on checks and balances. We need to remain that way.
