Congressman Kennedy Statement on Farm Bill

Statement

Date: Jan. 29, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Joe Kennedy released the following statement after voting against HR 2642, the Agricultural Act of 2014.

"The compromises included in the Farm Bill are impressive and hard-fought. From ending direct payments to extending critical trade policy, my colleagues worked tirelessly to find common ground on long overdue reforms for our country's agricultural industry, and I commend their progress.

"But at a time when one in five American children live in homes that struggle to put food on the table, I cannot support a piece of legislation that cuts food stamps by another $9 billion. The past twelve months have seen cuts to SNAP, cuts to LIHEAP, cuts to unemployment insurance, cuts to Head Start, cuts to Medicaid, cuts to WIC, cuts to student loans, and cuts to affordable housing. Enough is enough. Working families cannot be the eternal bargaining chip in federal policy."
