Dent Votes to Make Sure Consumers Will be Informed if Private Data is Compromised

Statement

Congressman Charlie Dent (PA-15) joined with a large bipartisan group of fellow representatives to pass H.R. 3811, the Health Exchange Security and Transparency Act out of the House.

H.R. 3811 requires the Department of Health and Human Services to notify individuals, within two business days, of a breach of any security system maintained by a federal or state exchange that is known to have resulted in personally identifiable information being stolen or unlawfully accessed.

"This is a commonsense measure," said Rep. Dent. "That's why 67 Democrats joined with every Republican to pass it." The legislation received 291 total votes -- a veto-proof majority.

Given the troubled development history of the HealthCare.gov website, the public remains concerned about potential security issues.

Dent stated:
"Due to the flaws in the design of the web exchange, this legislation is necessary to deal with a situation that consumers could face if the site's security is breached and their personal information is at risk. It is critical that Americans receive timely notification if their information is compromised. This security measure should immediately be approved by the Senate and signed by the President."
