Congressman Bob Gibbs Statement Regarding the Passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013

Press Release

Date: Dec. 13, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

WASHINGTON, D.C.- Congressman Bob Gibbs released the following statement regarding the passage of the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2013.

"This agreement is a positive step forward. For the first time since I have been in Congress, we have begun to address our country's mandatory spending problems, which accounts for two thirds of government spending. While discretionary spending is reviewed annually, Congress has previously failed to keep those spending cuts in place. Mandatory spending is on auto pilot and by cutting spending in this area we are able to reduce the deficit without further action by Congress.

"This bill takes steps to strengthen our national security by reversing previously damaging cuts to our defense programs in exchange for sensible spending reforms. Our national security has taken severe cuts in the past and I do not want to put our security at risk due to continued reckless spending. Although this bill is not perfect, it is a compromise and a positive step towards fiscal responsibility."
