U.S. Representative Patrick E. Murphy (FL-18) made the following statement applauding the unveiling of House Memorial 607 by Florida State Representative Gayle Harrell (R-Port St. Lucie) declaring the urgency for Congress to prioritize Everglades restoration efforts to provide relief to the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. The Congressman is endorsing the Memorial, calling for its swift passage by the state legislature so it can be brought to Congress.
"I thank Rep. Harrell for her work in the Florida House to bring the state's attention to the problems facing our waterways on the Treasure Coast and the importance of Everglades restoration projects to provide relief from this pollution. It was great to have her join our meeting last weekend with the head of the Army Corps to discuss ways in which all levels of government can work collaboratively to find real solutions to the problems facing the St. Lucie River and Indian River Lagoon. It is clear that the local, state, and federal representatives of the Treasure Coast not only share common priorities, including the completion of the C-44 Indian River Lagoon project and repairs to the Herbert Hoover Dike as well as progress on overall Everglades restoration efforts, but we also are all committed to working together towards these solutions.
"I not only wish to applaud Rep. Harrell for introducing this Memorial but also invite her to join me in Washington as soon as the state legislature adopts this measure so we can join forces and provide a united front to lobby Members of Congress on the importance of Everglades restoration for both our environment and economy on the Treasure Coast. Together, we will continue to show that we are not going to forget about this problem just because we have entered the dry season. I look forward to continuing to work with Rep. Harrell and officials across all levels of government on this issue of vital importance."
