Rockefeller Statement on One Year After the Sandy Hook Tragedy

Statement

Date: Dec. 13, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Senator Jay Rockefeller released the following statement ahead of the anniversary of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, on December 14, 2012. In the days after the Sandy Hook tragedy, Rockefeller, who is Chairman of the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee, introduced legislation that seeks to determine what, if any, link exists between violent video games and gun violence among young people.

"West Virginians still grieve for all those who lost their lives in Newtown, Connecticut, so tragically and senselessly one year ago. Our hearts still ache when we think of those families who lost a child, and for all others who lost a parent, a spouse and a friend. We will never forget the pain Newtown endured last December, and we should commit ourselves as public servants to do whatever we can to prevent a tragedy of this magnitude from ever happening again. In the year since Newtown, Congress has failed to make any meaningful progress on reducing gun violence. I'm deeply frustrated by this. Once again today, I'm urging my colleagues to take a step forward that will help us understand what may be causing violence in our society, and pass my legislation that will convene a study on the impact of violent video games and other content on the well-being of children. We must do everything possible to keep our children safe."
