Dingell Statement on GOP's Continued Efforts to Repeal Affordable Health Care

Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI12) released the following statement on H.R. 3350, the "Keep Your Health Plan Act of 2013," which ignores the concerns of individuals whose plans are being cancelled and instead attempts to repeal and roll back much-needed provisions to ensure good, affordable health care coverage.

"This bill is nothing but an attempt to take us back to the days where insurance companies had free rein to discriminate against the American people. If this bill is enacted, insurance companies would be free to charge women more for insurance just because they are women, they could place lifetime limits on their care so coverage is not available at the time when you need it most, and it would allow companies to deny coverage based on pre-existing conditions.

"The American people are looking for protection against these abusive practices, not a return to them. Yesterday, President Obama announced an executive action that allows states insurance commissioners to extend plans that are in existence today. This is a smart move that gives consumers some flexibility while the website is still not working as intended. The Affordable Care Act is the law of the land, and the consumer protections are among the most significant parts of the law. Let's not turn back the clock, and instead move forward and fix the Affordable Care Act rather than creating new problems."
