Rangel: Thankful for Today, Optimistic for Tomorrow

Statement

Date: Nov. 27, 2013

"Millions of American families will come together this week to commemorate the spirited occasion of Thanksgiving, which is a time to appreciate what we have and celebrate with our families and friends who have shared our joys and tears throughout the year. With that in mind, it is important to remember those less fortunate including people with illnesses and help today's hungry families by reaching out to them during this holiday season.

While keeping in mind our priorities, it is vital that Congress continues to fight to stop SNAP cuts and other nutrition provisions of the farm bill that so many of my constituents depend on for their survival during these harsh economic times in our country, especially during the holidays. Those who will no longer be able to qualify for the program designed to cut more of the benefits include some of our nation's most vulnerable adults, as well as many low-income families, children, and seniors, that work for low wages.

I am proud to recognize great organizations that offer their dedication and commitment to help the most vulnerable in our Congressional District: the Bailey House, Chambers Memorial Baptist Church, Community Kitchen of Harlem, Harlem Community Nutritional Pantry, Harlem Dowling-West Side Center for Child and Community Services, Iris House, Yorkville Common Pantry, Community Association of Progressive Dominicans, Community Center of Immigrants , Westside Federation for Seniors And Supportive Housing, St. Mary's Episcopal Church, St. Cecilia's Parish , Scan-NY/LA Guardia Memorial, Good Shepherd Church, The Riverside Church, The West Side Campaign Against Hunger, National Action Network, Children's Aid Society, Ricardo's Steakhouse, Harlem Children's Zone, NBA Players Association, Don King Productions, TLC NYS NAACP Conference, Fairway Market, Green Market, Sylvia's Restaurant, Feed the Children, Inc., Goddard Riverside Community Center, and Friendly Hands Ministry. I am grateful for their continuous efforts to improve the lives of people in our district.

I encourage my constituents to volunteer at a local charity or food shelter during the holidays (please see at http://volunteer.foodbanknyc.org/). I am both honored and privileged to represent New York's 13th Congressional District. As we embrace the season with hope for a better future for our community and country, I wish you all a blessed and Happy Thanksgiving."
