Barrow Requests Congressional Hearing Into Problems at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman John Barrow (GA-12) today sent a letter to the leaders of the House Committee on Veterans Affairs, including the leaders of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations (O&I), requesting a formal field hearing at the Charlie Norwood VA Medical Center (CNVAMC) in Augusta regarding the patient deaths due to lack of sufficient care. Yesterday and today, Congressman Barrow is speaking to Chairman Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) and Ranking Member Mike Michaud (D-Maine), as well as O&I Chairman Mike Coffman (R-Colo.) and Ranking Member Ann Kirkpatrick (D-Ariz.) to discuss the issue.

"What has happened at the Charlie Norwood VA is totally unacceptable," said Congressman Barrow. "We have a responsibility to provide the best care to our nation's veterans, and clearly, that did not happen. I've requested a Congressional hearing to get to the bottom of what has happened, and to ensure it does not happen again. We must hold the personnel responsible for these missteps accountable, and I'm committed to ensuring veterans get the best care possible in the future."

Today, Congressman Barrow met with CNVAMC Director Robert Hamilton in Augusta to discuss the steps they are taking to prevent these problems from happening in the future. In addition, Congressman Barrow has reached out to United States Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric Shinseki regarding the issue.
