Congressman Jon Runyan (NJ-3) made the following statement regarding the passage of S. 893, the Veterans Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Act of 2013:
"I am so pleased that the House of Representatives has passed the Veterans Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2013, a companion bill to legislation I introduced earlier this year in the House.
This annual COLA is very important to the men and women who courageously risked their lives in service to our country. While I am incredibly grateful that we were able to get this done, for the remainder of my time here in the House, I will continue to strongly urge my colleagues to join me in supporting an automatic COLA. This is not something that should be left to the whims of Congress every year. It ought to be automatic and permanent- our veterans deserve nothing less."
As a freshman Member of Congress, Rep. Runyan's first bill that was signed into law was H.R. 1407, the Veterans' Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2011. This gave disabled veterans their first COLA in several years.
