Issue Position: Government Oversight

Issue Position

Americans have a right to know that the money Washington takes from them is well spent, that the government they fund is efficient, effective, and really at work for them. My job as Chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee is to help Americans secure these rights.

Our solemn responsibility is to hold government accountable to you, the taxpayers, because you have a right to know what you're getting from the government. Oversight Committee members and I will work tirelessly, in partnership with citizen-watchdogs, to bring light to the hidden parts of government and reform the federal bureaucracy so that it better serves the American people.

Proposals to increase government transparency & accountability include:

Audit the Federal Reserve Act: Requires a complete audit of the Board of Directors, submission of the audit report to both the House and Senate and submission of recommendations for legislative action Congress can take to protect taxpayers and render the Federal Reserve more efficient;

DATA Act: Requires each person, state, local, or tribal government that receives appropriated funds to report at least once quarterly each receipt and use of such funds;

Fannie Mae and Freddie Max Accountability and Transparency for Taxpayers Act: Increases transparency of certain actions by Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac including liabilities, investments, and management to order to prevent future mismanagement;

Transparency of State and Local Public Employee Pension Plans, H.R. 567:

Prevents federal government bailouts of state and local government pensions and increases public transparency of their financial commitments.
