Congressman Eric Cantor (VA-7) released the following statement on passage of the PREEMIE Reauthorization Act, as amended by the House:
"Every year more than half a million babies are born premature putting them at risk of severe health problems and lifelong disabilities. Expanding and expediting life-saving medical research to help children is a top priority. Passage of the PREEMIE Act will continue important programs underway as well as better coordinate pediatric research at the National Institutes of Health, especially for rare diseases such as spinal muscular atrophy. FightSMA, March of Dimes, and the families that help support these groups, were instrumental in advancing this important legislation. Special thanks to proud parents and Virginians, Martha and Joe Slay, who have personally been touched by this cause. Given the bipartisan and bicameral support of this bill, I urge the President to swiftly sign it into law so we can help more families and ensure all children have the chance to lead healthy lives."
