Gov. Jay Nixon today visited the Calhoun R-VIII School District to announce six new investments through the Missouri Start Smart initiative to expand access to quality early childhood education opportunities so that more Missouri children start kindergarten ready to succeed in school and beyond.
Gov. Jay Nixon announcing a competitive grant through the Missouri Start Smart initiative to help the Calhoun R-VIII School District construct a new 19,500 square foot pre-kindergarten facility that will serve an additional 30 children in Calhoun.
"Making sure communities have access to affordable early childhood education programs helps young children succeed in school and helps parents stay in the workforce," Gov. Nixon said. "Educational opportunities create economic opportunities, and that's why early childhood education is a smart investment with a big return."
During his visit to Calhoun today, the Governor announced that through the Missouri Start Smart initiative, the Missouri Department of Economic Development will authorize a funding award of $852,000 for the Calhoun Community Development Group to assist the school district in constructing a new 19,500 square foot pre-kindergarten facility that will serve an additional 30 children in Calhoun.
