Press Release

Date: Oct. 24, 2013
Location: Miami, FL
Issues: Education

Today, Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, a senior member of the Florida congressional delegation, met with Miami-Dade middle and high school students to discuss their project, MalalaUSA. These young ladies, who attend Our Lady of Lourdes Academy, ISPA Magnet Public School, Saint Brendan High School, and Conchita Espinosa Academy have presented the thesis of their project, which is that education is a human right, to various high schools throughout Miami-Dade County with the help of Miami-Dade School Board Member Raquel Regalado. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:

"It was a pleasure to meet with these young, dynamic girls who are working to change their community for the better. The principle that every child, especially young girls, should have access to education is one that will help bring about a better life for many around the world. I applaud their efforts to work toward a community where every girl will take advantage of every educational opportunity and a world where everyone will receive an education."

Note: MalalaUsa, was founded based on the example of Malala Yousafzai, 16, a Pakistani girl who has fought tirelessly for the right of girls to receive an education. Malala has been internationally recognized by various governments, publications, and has received distinguished awards such as the 2013 Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought, the Ambassador of Conscience Award from Amnesty International, and was named one of Time's 100 Most Influential People of the Year.
