DeLauro Statement On Bipartisan Agreement To Reopen The Government And Avoid Debt Crisis

Statement

Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) released the following statement today on the bipartisan agreement to reopen the government and avoid defaulting on our country's debt.

"Tonight I voted to end the Republican Government Shutdown and to ensure that we pay our bills on time. People will go back to work, lifesaving biomedical research will restart, parents will not be worrying their child's Head Start classroom could close, small businesses will have access to loans and our national parks will reopen. The American people deserve to have their government open for business, but to paraphrase the author T.S. Eliot: This is the way the shutdown ends, not with a bang, but with a whimper.

"Regrettably, the bill we voted on tonight continues the deep and indiscriminate budget cuts known as sequestration. These cuts are unwise and harmful to key government programs that benefit millions of Americans. Today's agreement is also only a temporary solution, potentially setting up another confrontation early next year. All the Republican Government Shutdown did was hurt people and inflict damage on our economy in any attempt to deny health care coverage to millions of Americans. I hope my Republican colleagues will now work across the aisle on a balanced approach that avoids another shutdown, creates jobs and rebuilds the economy."
