Rep. Maffei Statement on Bipartisan Solution to Reopen Government and Avoid Default

Statement

Date: Oct. 16, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Today U.S. Representative Dan Maffei (D-Syracuse) released the following statement after voting with a bipartisan majority to pass legislation that would reopen the federal government and prevent the United States from defaulting:

"For weeks I have been meeting with both Democrats and Republicans to come up with a solution to reopen the government and prevent our nation from defaulting on its bills. Today's bipartisan compromise achieves both of those goals and will provide our economy with much-needed stability.

"Keeping our government running and paying our nation's bills should not be partisan issues. Yet for more than two weeks, a few dozen Tea Party extremists in the House have allowed our government to be shut down in order to advance a purely political agenda. These same Tea Party extremists also threatened to allow a default on our national debt, which would jeopardize the full faith and credit of the United States and have catastrophic impacts on our economy and financial markets around the world.

"Fortunately, reasonable members on both sides of the aisle came together today to pass a bipartisan solution that will open the federal government and allow our nation to pay its bills. I will continue to work with commonsense Democrats and Republicans to come up with bipartisan solutions that create jobs, strengthen the middle class, and grow our economy."
