My Address to the National Congress of American Indians

Statement

The Federal government shutdown and sequestration represent a direct and immediate threat to the survival of Native Americans in our country. The survival of Native tribes and their members is being threatened by the actions of small radical wing of the Republican Party. I call on the Speaker of the House to immediately allow the House to vote on a clean continuing resolution to fund the government and allow Native populations to access essential resources. Our trust responsibility to Native people extends from our Constitutional and treaty-based obligations and, therefore, should never be subject to the political whims and games of a small group of Representatives determined to create chaos. H.J. Res 80 is a political gimmick that does not fully fund these obligations.
