On Wednesday Congress voted to reopen the federal government and raise the national debt ceiling. Hundreds of thousands of government employees were able to return to work and American families can now breathe a little easier.

The legislation that passed contains provisions that keep the government funded through January 15th, and raise the debt limit until February 7th. It also establishes a bipartisan budget conference that is responsible for drafting a budget proposal before the next deadline. I am hopeful that the new conference will draft a sensible proposal that will stimulate our economy while cutting wasteful spending.

As we move forward, we must not forget the toll that the gridlock in Washington took on our nation's economy and families. A shutdown must not happen again.
