Dear President Obama:

America has a proud history of promoting trade and investment policies that encourage the top companies in the world to invest billions of dollars in our economy. The investments these global companies make here in the U.S. help create hundreds of thousands of highly skilled American jobs.

Equally important, these global companies bring innovative products and cutting-edge manufacturing processes to our country. These products and processes help diversify the American economy and create greater competition and enhanced product value for American consumers.

Japanese automakers are among those global companies who demonstrate these benefits and who have a significant presence in our states. As your Administration continues to negotiate the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), we want to highlight the positive impact that Japanese investment -- specifically in the auto sector -- has had in our states.

Over the past 50 plus years, these automakers have become a key component of the U.S. auto manufacturing sector -- investing a total of $47.1 billion in 29 plants and other major facilities. This commitment by some of the world's leading car makers has resulted in the creation of over 76,000 U.S. jobs. When our local dealerships are factored in, that number quickly jumps to a staggering 419,000 Americans who benefit from this type of direct investment.

The combination of new state-of-the-art production facilities, cutting edge manufacturing processes and a U.S. workforce that is second to none has resulted in the production and sale of some of our nation's most popular vehicles. While we are proud of the existing network of manufacturing facilities, supplier networks and dealerships, the potential for further growth exists.

In order to further grow the U.S. economy and create new job opportunities, Congress and the Administration must continue to foster a business climate that promotes the United States as a premier location for global companies to build, sell and export their products.
