Broun Urges Senate to Join Conversation & Stop Shutdown

Statement

Date: Oct. 1, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Congressman Paul Broun, M.D. (GA-10) today released the following statement after voting in support of three individual bills that would have provided funding for the Department of Veterans Affairs, the national parks system, and would have allowed the District of Columbia to use local revenue to operate essential services during the shutdown.

Rep. Broun said, "I am adamantly opposed to a government shutdown. I voted twice for legislation which would avoid a shutdown and keep the government open while protecting Americans from the Obamacare trainwreck. Unfortunately, Harry Reid and the President have continuously slammed the door on House Republicans trying to negotiate and find ways to keep the government running.

"Once again, House Republicans came to the negotiating table alone and tonight offered legislation which would have put an end to delayed veterans benefits, opened national parks and memorials, and would have allowed the District of Columbia to use their own revenue to keep operating during the government shutdown. It is unfortunate that the President who vowed to veto any such efforts, and House Democrats who voted against these bills, are trying to make this shutdown as painful as possible.

"House Republicans are working towards solutions that will provide relief to the American people, while protecting them from the harmful provisions in Obamacare. It's time Harry Reid and the President start listening so that we can end this shutdown, put Americans back to work, and stop the destroyer that is Obamacare."
