House Republicans Continue to Offer Solutions During Government Shutdown

Press Release

Today, the House of Representatives passed House Joint Resolution 89, the bi-partisan Federal Worker Pay Fairness Act, providing a direct appropriation for federal employees deemed "essential" during any period in Fiscal Year 2014 in which there is a funding lapse.

"The continued refusal of Senate Democrats to negotiate is bad for everyone -- including those federal employees who are still required to come into work despite the partial government shutdown," Marino said. "Tonight, the House acted yet again to ensure funding for critical government operations would be available by passing legislation that allows for essential personnel to be paid on time."

Over the weekend, the House of Representatives voted unanimously to pass a bill that allowed for all furloughed federal employees to receive back pay. However, those federal employees deemed "essential" -- those who are still going to work -- do not know when their next paycheck will be issued. H.J.Res. 89 removes that uncertainty and ensures these employees will be paid on time.

"I have heard the concerns of corrections officers who work for the Bureau of Prisons, officers who are on the front lines, and I carried their concerns directly to House leadership. These officers face danger, violence, hostility and hazard every day when they go to work. The last thing they need to face is uncertainty over whether or not they'll get a paycheck on time," Marino added.

"The House continues to do its work of representing the American people and Harry Reid now has eleven bills sitting on his desk that will minimize the impact of this partial shutdown, including the bill we passed tonight to ensure the men and women like those at USP Canaan, USP Lewisburg and FCC Allenwood are paid on time. While the Senate is unreasonably content to continue its refusal to even consider any of these measures, let alone negotiate, the House stands ready and waiting," Marino said. "Let's talk."

United States Penitentiary, Canaan, Wayne County, United States Penitentiary Lewisburg, Union County, and Federal Correctional Complex, Allenwood, Lycoming and Union Counties are all located in Pennsylvania's 10th Congressional District.

The House passed H.J.Res. 89 with unanimous support, by a vote of 420-0.
