Congressman John Fleming, M.D., made the following remarks at a press conference this afternoon introducing the Republican Study Committee's American Health Care Reform Act:
"I came to Washington in 2009, after watching how government's encroachment into health care made it less effective and more expensive, to work on market reforms that would make health care more affordable and more available. Instead, what we got was Obamacare.
"The American Health Care Reform Act expands access to Health Savings Accounts (HSAs). As a business owner I saw how HSAs could save on health care costs by encouraging individual patients to invest as consumers. We want to bring consumer choice back into health care, and we want this to be a patient-centered plan where health care providers compete on price and quality and consumers can make valuable choices. That will bring health care costs down.
"There's no way the American Health Care Reform Act or any other measure can fix Obamacare because Obamacare is based on government making all the decisions. We can't graft something that's market-based and patient-centered on top of a giant bureaucratic structure. It is important that we fully repeal Obamacare. Even if we delay or defund it for the next year, our ultimate goal is to fully repeal it. Obamacare is not fixable and has to be taken down."
