Under Public Law 113-6, enacted on March 26, 2013, current legal funding authority for government operations expired at midnight on September 30, 2013. I have been a strong proponent of keeping the government open and operating. I have been listening to my constituents and the American people, who unambiguously believe their government has a responsibility to provide essential services, from defense and homeland security, to overseeing the banking system, operating the national power grid, and administering safety net programs. This week, I joined my colleagues in the House in passing a bill to fully fund the government. Unfortunately at this time, pending Senate action to adopt the House-passed Continuing Resolution, the federal government is operating under a partial shutdown. Under federal law, the Obama Administration has broad authority to make determinations about which federal agencies and programs can continue to operate at this time. My Congressional office has furloughed all employees, except those specifically provided for by law as necessary to maintain legislative operations and insure the Constitutionally-mandated representation of our district. We ask for your patience as we work to extend government funding authority and restore operations. My offices will remain open and continue to serve constituents to the best of our ability.
