Rep. McKinley: The American People Deserve Fairness

Statement

Date: Sept. 30, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Tonight, Rep. David B. McKinley voted to keep the government from shutting down at midnight, delay the individual mandate and end Obamacare subsidies for Members of Congress.

"This is a matter of fairness," said McKinley. "Families and individuals deserve to have the same relief from the health care law that President Obama granted for big businesses, and Members of Congress and the White House should not receive special treatment. It's that simple."

"The law is the law, and it says Congress will get the same health care that is being forced on millions of Americans," said McKinley. "Providing a subsidy that is not available for others is unfair and runs counter to the law itself."

"At the same time, the President has already delayed the Obamacare mandate for big business by one year, and it's only fair individuals receive the same treatment," said McKinley. "All Americans deserve the same relief from the impacts of this unworkable law that Obama gave big businesses."

"The House will continue to work to keep the government open," said McKinley. "However, the Senate Democrats are refusing to negotiate on even these common sense provisions. Should the government shut down tonight it will be because Harry Reid and his allies should stop trying to protect their own special privileges, and start compromising to keep the government open."
