U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow issued the following statement today on the government shutdown:
"A shutdown is bad for our economy, delaying small business loans and blocking exports, holding up pay and benefits for veterans, and interrupting some Social Security claims. Tea Party Republicans need to start working across the aisle to help businesses create jobs, not hurt our economy and shut down the government when they can't get what they want through the democratic process.
"Bipartisan cooperation to solve problems is possible. With the Farm Bill, we brought Democrats and Republicans together to help create jobs and cut spending, and the bill passed the Senate with broad bipartisan support in June. Unfortunately, House Republicans have delayed action on that bill as well, and the current Farm Bill is now also expiring. The Republicans' government shutdown will create tremendous uncertainty throughout the economy, and the 16 million people who work in agriculture will be facing even more uncertainty until Congress finally passes a new Farm Bill."
