Hastings Encouraged by Discussions on WTP, Hopeful for Complete Plan Soon

Press Release

Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Doc Hastings released the following statement on the Department of Energy's (DOE) framework for the Waste Treatment Plant (WTP) at Hanford:
"Secretary Moniz has been in regular contact with me about the Department's work on a path forward for WTP. After two years of waiting, I'm encouraged that the Department is having conversations with the State of Washington about options for finishing and operating WTP as safely and quickly as possible.

"Much more information about the ideas outlined in this framework is required -- including details about workscope, schedule, cost and impacts on the Consent Decree. Safety and business cases have not yet been demonstrated by DOE for any newly proposed facility or modification.

"WTP is a complex, one-of-a-kind facility. We have always known there would be challenges along the way -- but WTP is not optional. WTP is an integral part of cleaning up Hanford's tank waste. Progress is being made on the ground at the site and that must continue.

"I appreciate the personal attention Secretary Moniz has paid to resolving these cleanup challenges and I remain hopeful that a realistic and complete plan will be finished soon."
