Olson: Obama WH Ignores Constitution with Signing of UN Arms Trade Treaty

Statement

Date: Sept. 26, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Pete Olson (TX-22) today came out in strong opposition to Secretary of State John Kerry's actions in signing the United Nations Arms Trade Treaty (ATT). The ATT would apply to "small arms and light weapons" within its scope, which covers firearms owned by law-abiding citizens in violation of the Second Amendment of the US Constitution. It also requires countries to establish regulations for selling conventional weapons. Moreover, a bipartisan majority of the US Senate is already on record in opposition to ratification of the ATT.

"Once again, the Obama Administration is ignoring the will of the American people and, in this case, the United States Senate as well, which have both expressed strong opposition to US participation in the ATT. This treaty fails to expressly recognize the fundamental, individual and constitutional right of Americans to keep and bear arms, as well as the right to personal self-defense. The current treaty language would infringe on our sacred freedoms protected by the Second Amendment. Fortunately, the ATT is not binding unless it is ratified by the U.S. Senate, and there is little hope that the Senate will take it up."
