Gov. Peter Shumlin and Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Robert Ide announced that effective today the State of Vermont is offering driver's licenses and non-driver ID cards designating veteran status.

"My administration is committed to doing everything it can to recognize and celebrate the remarkable sacrifice our veterans have made," said Gov. Shumlin. "By adding a veteran designation on driver's licenses and ID cards to the several veteran designated license plates currently available, the DMV is further acknowledging the sacrifice of these brave men and women."

"The increased visibility that this designation provides our service members will aid in providing all veterans the services and benefits they have so rightfully earned," added Commissioner Ide. The feature will provide valuable information to first responders and will help the Office of Veterans' Services notify veterans of benefits they are eligible to receive.

Veterans' licenses will be available at all six DMV branch offices and two mobile units as of today, and is a free service to all veterans upon license renewal. All those interested should register with the Office of Veteran's Services before applying.
