Today, Congressman John D. Dingell (D-MI12) released the following statement recognizing the observance of Labor Day on Monday, September 2, 2013.
"This Labor Day, we honor the very engine of our middle class and the center of our economic recovery: working Americans. We recognize this day because, throughout our nation's history, organized labor fought for workers' rights, a fight to ensure fair treatment in the workplace for all individuals. Our parents and grandparents helped to lead this movement, fighting for an end to child labor, the establishment of a fair working wage and security for retirement. They realized that the health and wellbeing of our workers made for both a more efficient workforce and a quality of life standard we had never seen before. From workplace safety standards to the implementation of paid sick and vacation leave, we owe so much to our brothers and sisters in organized labor.
"I thank working Americans for all they do and remain committed to advancing policies that protect them, invest in the middle class, and secure a brighter future for all Americans."
