Rep. Richmond Reflects on the Anniversary of Hurricane Katrina

Statement

Date: Aug. 29, 2013
Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Cedric Richmond (LA-02) released the following statement marking the eighth anniversary of Hurricane Katrina:

"Today, I join my fellow Louisianans as we reflect on the horrible day that Hurricane Katrina delivered a devastating and life-altering blow to the Gulf Coast region. The state of Louisiana and the entire nation will never forget the catastrophic impact of the storm and the events that followed. That day, a disastrous mix of natural and man-made elements claimed the lives of more than 1,800 of our neighbors, family members, and friends-- changing life as we knew it. The storm took a physical, emotional and financial toll on every man, woman and child in its reach. Eight years later, communities are still struggling to pick up the pieces of their lives. As we reflect on the eighth anniversary of the most catastrophic storm in U.S. History, I am inspired by the lessons that have emerged from the families, businesses and communities along the Gulf Coast. Every school, road and home that is rebuilt and every business that returns is a testament that our rebirth has been defined not by our tragedy, but instead by our triumph."
