Congresswoman Duckworth Travels to Thailand to Strengthen U.S. Partnerships

Statement

Date: Sept. 9, 2013
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Last week, Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth (IL-08) returned from Thailand where she advocated for U.S. businesses and strengthened the relationship between the two nations. She worked with the U.S. State Department and the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the trip. Duckworth is fluent in Thai and spent part of her childhood in Thailand.

Congresswoman Duckworth's visit included meetings with US Embassy officials, speaking with American Veterans living in Thailand, discussions with the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangkok and meetings with high ranking members of the Thai government. In her meetings Duckworth advocated for U.S. businesses exporting to Southeast Asia.

"I am honored to help reaffirm the great friendship between the United States and Thailand," said Duckworth. "Asia is important to the global economy and international security. I am confident that the 180 years of Thai-American relationship will continue to grow as both nations join together to work towards a safe and prosperous Asia Pacific region."

"Southeast Asia provides numerous opportunities for businesses throughout our country and I look forward to continuing to advocate for policies that help American exporters to seize these opportunities."

"It is essential that Congress enact policies which empower businesses to export overseas and create jobs. These policies include creating an infrastructure bank so that our products can be sent efficiently around the globe, reforming the tax code so that businesses have incentive to grow and create jobs and investing in education -- especially in training for high skilled manufacturing jobs."
