Congressman Marsha Blackburn (TN-7) today issued the following statement in support of legislation sponsored by Representative Diane Black (TN-6), H.R. 2775, to require verification of taxpayer subsidies in Obamacare.
"I commend my friend and colleague Representative Black for her tremendous work in leading the effort to pass this common sense legislation in the House. Through our experience with TennCare, which had no verification, we have learned what happens when these programs have no oversight -- they become too expensive to afford.
"The Affordable Care Act is wrought with the potential for abuse. As it stands now, Health and Human Services will depend on applicants to "self attest' their income in order to receive Obamacare exchange subsidies. This legislation would require the Obama Administration to have an income verification system in place before subsidies are distributed.
"H.R. 2775 seeks to close a gaping hole in the President's health care law that estimates show could cost the American taxpayers as much as $250 billion in fraud. This legislation is another important step House Republicans are taking to fight waste, fraud, and abuse in Obamacare."
"Elected officials have the responsibility to be good stewards of every taxpayer dollar and I call upon Leader Reid to bring this bill up for a vote in the Senate before the American people are on the hook for more wasteful spending."
