Issue Position

Our country needs progressives in Washington. Progressives look out for the middle class and those living in poverty. We put peoples' needs over the wants of big corporations. We believe in equal rights for all whether it's popular or not. And as the Tea Party attempts to pull our country further to the radical right, it is absolutely crucial we elect a Member of Congress who will promote these values. Here in Massachusetts' 5th District, we have been fortunate to have Ed Markey as our Congressman -- one of the leading progressive voices on social, domestic, and foreign policy. This district deserves to have another progressive leader, who is equally dedicated, to replace him.

As a co-founder of the Progressive Caucus in our state legislature, I have a proven record of taking on these fights. I have stood up to my own party leadership for economic justice -- not only sponsoring and passing a bill to raise the minimum wage, but also one closing corporate tax loopholes. I made sure Massachusetts' non-discrimination and hate crimes laws include gender identity -- even when members of our own party said Massachusetts wasn't ready for that. I fought hard for climate change legislation that caps carbon emissions in Massachusetts. And I wrote the landmark Buffer Zone Bill to protect access to reproductive health clinics without harassment -- a fight we're taking all the way to the US Supreme Court.

Being a progressive doesn't just mean being a reliable vote for the Democrats -- it means leading on issues like these and organizing others to stand strong when the going gets tough. That's what I've always done, and that's why I proudly have the support of one of the country's leading progressive organizations, People For the American Way, in my race for Congress.
