Issue Position: Energy and Environment

We have an obligation to future generations to do a better job of protecting the environment and addressing climate change. High temperatures, rising sea levels and extreme weather conditions pose a threat to our health, economic prosperity and national security. We must implement a broad range of solutions focused on creating new sources of energy, ending our dependence on foreign oil and reducing green house emissions.

Greater Investment in New Sources of Energy

A sustainable future will require greater investment in the development of new energy sources, including wind, solar, and hydropower. There is a wealth of research being done by both private and public entities in Massachusetts on this issue, and it is critical to support and expand those efforts.

The growth of alternative energy industries is not just good for the environment -- it will also increase the demand for skilled workers, and help create more green jobs. It is also important that we work with our local universities and colleges to provide the necessary curriculum as they adapt to meet the changing needs of tomorrow's workforce.

Putting An End to Tax Subsidies for Big Oil Companies

In order to continue to grow our green economy Congress should put an end to big oil tax subsidies. If we want use federal tax breaks to encourage business growth in certain areas, we should be encouraging growth in areas that will create new innovation and provide options for consumers that do not harm the environment.

If we want to spur innovation and promote the development of clean technologies we must level the playing field between big oil companies and the small businesses looking to innovate.

Improve and Expand Our Transit and Commuter Rail Systems

We must focus on improving and expanding our transit and commuter rails systems in order to give commuters a viable alternative to driving. Massachusetts has one of the oldest transit systems in the country and we need more federal investment in the upgrades and expansions that will increase ridership. Increased use of public transportation will reduce traffic, increase jobs and most importantly, improve the quality of life for residents.

Ed Markey was a national leader on these issues and Massachusetts will be well served in the Senate, where he will continue the fight to improve our environment. I hope to have the opportunity to join Ed Markey in Washington and add my voice to these important issues.

A comprehensive approach to reducing our environmental impact and promoting energy independence will free us from our reliance on oil prices set on the global market and will also foster clean energy innovation, increased economic activity, and protect public health.
