Rep. Radel to Vote NO on Authorizing Military Force in Syria

Statement

Date: Sept. 5, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Following a classified intelligence briefing and a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing with Secretary of State John Kerry, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Martin Dempsey, Congressman Trey Radel (FL-19) today announced his decision to vote NO on any resolution to authorize the use of military force in Syria. Rep. Radel had the following comments:

"After being briefed by high level Administration officials, the President has not made the case that America must get involved in the ongoing Syrian civil war. Currently, there is no direct or even indirect threat to the United States, our interests or our allies. Furthermore, I fear a strike could potentially destabilize the country and region even more.

"I will be voting NO on granting the President authority to use military force in Syria."

Congressman Radel is a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Vice Chairman of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee and a member of the Middle East Subcommittee.
