State Representative Chad Fincher (R- Semmes) released the following statement today in response to the Supreme Court's ruling today on the Defense of Marriage Act:
"Today's Supreme Court rulings overturning part of the federal Defense of Marriage Act is deeply disappointing. Five liberal justices neglected to uphold the will of the people through their elected representatives in Congress. I stand with the majority of citizens in South Alabama who support the institution of marriage as being between one man and one woman.
However disappointing the rulings maybe to those of us who believe in traditional marriage, the decisions should not cause despair. Thankfully, the court did not create a federal constitutional right to same-sex marriage as it did for abortion in 1973. This ruling does mean that we can never stop fighting for our conservative Alabama values. As South Alabama's next congressman, I will represent our conservative family values in Washington and fight to ensure that President Obama and the liberal interests in Washington will not go any further by interfering with Alabama's right to define marriage as one man and one woman."
