Stewart Statement on the Use of Military Action in Syria

Statement

Date: Sept. 3, 2013
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Foreign Affairs

Rep. Chris Stewart (R-Utah), released the following statement regarding the President's proposal to use military force in Syria:

"What we are witnessing throughout the Middle East is a direct result of the lack of American leadership and a coherent foreign policy," Stewart said. "The idea that we can 'lead from behind' is proving fatally flawed."

"I find the situation in Syria very troubling, leaving very little doubt that a critical line has been crossed. But before deciding what is the appropriate action to take, I need to see the wording of the President's proposed resolution for authorizing strikes, which is still being drafted."

"I intend to return to Washington as soon as practical to attend additional classified briefings. Once I have all of the facts about the proposed military plan, I will make a decision as to the best way to protect our national security and strategic interest."
