Today, Congressman Kenny Marchant (TX-24) released the following statement on the latest developments in Egypt:
"I strongly condemn the violence imposed on innocent Egyptians and urge the Obama Administration to fully suspend U.S. assistance to Egypt. The U.S. lends over a billion dollars in annual military aid to Egypt. Yet, in response to the recent mass killings of Egyptian civilians, the Administration has only suspended the delivery of four F-16 fighters and canceled a regular military exercise with the Egyptian army. This is not enough.
"It is against America's interest to provide aid to a government that kills protesters, just as we should not support groups that burn down churches, murder police and military personnel, and terrorize the public. Most Egyptians just want to live in a free, stable, and prosperous country, and it is in our national security interests to build relationships with those who seek that path. The U.S. should remain open to assist Egypt, but also recognize that it is ultimately Egyptians who determine their own future."
